Severe thunderstorms erupted ahead of a slow-moving frontal boundary from the Ohio Valley into the Northeast on July 26, 2012.
Over 300 reports of primarily damaging winds were concentrated from Connecticut westward into Ohio and northern Kentucky. Additional severe thunderstorms with damaging winds erupted from the mid-Mississippi Valley into the southern Plains Thursday. These reports are depicted as blue arrows in the clickable storm reports map above.
The northern end of the squall line was particularly destructive as it raced through parts of Elmira, N.Y. just before 4pm ET.
A National Weather Service survey team, Friday, concluded an EF1 tornado, with maximum winds estimated up to 110 mph, touched down on the north side of the river just west of the city of Elmira in Harris Hill Manor, remaining on the ground for 10 miles.
Interestingly, this is the first tornado in the state of New York in 2012.

Another EF1 tornado was confirmed by a survey team near Montrose, Pa.

Severe Weather Expert, Dr. Greg Forbes (On Twitter | On Facebook), says this damaging wind event covered about 400 miles from northeast Ohio and northwest Pennsylvania to southwest Connecticut and New York City.
"Rather than being caused by one massive bow echo, this one was associated with a line of storms and embedded mini-bow echoes." Dr. Forbes says this kind of derecho is called a "serial derecho".

Fortunately, this particular system paled in comparison to the destructive derecho June 29, which tracked over 600 miles from Indiana to the Mid-Atlantic seaboard, leaving millions without power. This massive storm produced more than twice the number of damaging wind reports, as the July 26 derecho.
