Gordon began as Tropical Depression Eight late on August 15 over the north-central Atlantic. It was already outside the tropics when it formed at nearly 30 degrees North latitude.

Gordon quickly turned north, northeast, and eventually east-northeastward, eventually making landfall as a Category 1 hurricane on Santa Maria Island in the eastern Azores on the morning of August 20.
Winds gusted to 70 mph on Santa Maria Island as the hurricane swirled through. Later that same day, Gordon was downgraded to a post-tropical cyclone east of the Azores.
Gordon reached its peaked intensity as a category two hurricane on August 18. Only six other hurricanes in history have been within 200 nautical miles of Gordon's position at that time (34.1 N, 36.4 W).
